James “Jim” Prochazka, the son of Thomas and Mary (Kodal) Prochazka, was born on March 10, 1921 in Minneota Township, Jackson County, Minnesota.  He grew up on the family farm in Hunter Township with six siblings, and received his education at the nearby District 65 School.  Jim started raising pigs at age 10, and by age 18 he had taken over the major responsibility for operating the family farm.

In 1943, while playing a game of softball at a Bohemian picnic, he met his future wife, Irene Fiala.  Jim and Irene were married in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church on January 30, 1945, and from this union four children were born: Paulette, Judith, Kenneth, and John.

Jim enjoyed farming, planting and harvesting corn and soybeans, inventing and fabricating devices, and especially being around his cattle and hogs.  Jim and his wife Irene were active members of the Jackson County Pork Producers and had many friends in the farming community.

In 1988, Jim and Irene moved off of the family farm and into Jackson, but he remained active in farming into his mid-nineties.  For many years, Jim made almost daily trips out to the farm to help his son Ken.  In the fall of 2014, at the age of 93, he did the combining on the family farm for the last time.  Even this past winter he plowed the snow off of his driveway as only he could.  He hopped on his John Deere lawn mower to cut his grass for the last time just days before his passing.

Jim had a great sense of humor and enjoyed visiting and laughing with relatives and friends.  He was a devoted and loving husband and father.  He was a longtime member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church.

Jim is survived by his wife of 72 years, Irene, his children, Paulette (Mike) King of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Judith (Ralph) Bergantine of Bozeman, Montana; Ken (Brenda) Prochazka of Jackson, Minnesota; and John (Lisa) Prochazka of Alma, Colorado.  Also surviving are his nine grandchildren, Kimberly (Joshua), Christopher, Joseph (Stephanie), Sarah, Angela, Thomas, Jolene, Logan, and Carly.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Les, Mildred Frolick, Charles, Joe, Larry, and Lillian Martin.

Blessed be the memory of James Prochazka.

One Guestbook Entry for “James Prochazka”

  • My thoughts and sadness for the family. Jim was such a wonderful guy. I can still hear his voice and his laugh. I used to love visiting with him when I lived in Jackson. Warmest regards.
