Andrew John Kocak, Jr. passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on May 7, 2017 at the age of 81.

Andy was born on August 12, 1935 in Lakefield, Minnesota to Andrew and Mary (Pavelko) Kocak. He spent his childhood helping his dad on the family farm, getting into youthful shenanigans with his younger brother Steve, and attended country school. He graduated from Lakefield High School in 1954. While in high school, he met Jean Schulz and the two were united in marriage on January 16, 1956 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lakefield.

After their marriage, they resided in Jackson, MN for four years until finally putting down permanent roots at the Kocak family farm south of Lakefield in 1961. When Andy and Jean settled on the farm, there was no running water, no indoor toilet, and only three rooms. To accommodate his growing family, Andy built several additions to the house with his own two hands.

Andy was a member of the Minnesota National Guard, and served in the artillery from 1956-1962. He worked on a road crew with his older brother John while in high school, and then worked briefly at Land O’Lakes. He spent over 30 years at John Morrell in Estherville, IA and Sioux Falls, SD. After retiring from Morrell’s in 1989, he then spent another 14 years at Ag-Chem in Jackson, MN until his final retirement in 2003.

Some of Andy’s favorite pastimes included playing cards, outings to the casino, bowling league, garage sales, trips to the fair, cross-country road trips with his family, military history, collecting toy tractors, trap shooting, and western movies. The one thing that Andy loved almost as much as God and his family was farming. Whether it was planting in the spring or tinkering with an Oliver tractor, he found constant enjoyment working the land where he grew up.

Andy’s wry sense of humor will be missed by his family and friends, especially his wife, Jean of Lakefield, children David (Jackie) Kocak of Sioux Falls, Rob (Teng) Kocak of Lakefield, Jeff (Jean) Kocak of Yankton, Tony (Terri) Kocak of Sioux Falls, Brian (Lisa) Kocak of Lakefield, and Kari (Kocak) Beck of Brandon; 13 grandchildren Tressie, Derek, Jordan, Ashley, Kimber, Cortney, Dustin, A.J., Ryan, Dillon, Alec, Matthew, and Makenna, and 13 great-grandchildren; sister Betty Lev of Jackson, as well as assorted cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Evelyn, and brothers John and Steve.
