Gloria Jean Smith

Gloria Jean Swanson was born on August 11, 1931 in Jackson, Minnesota to Arthur and Henrietta (Otterson) Swanson. She began school in Jackson, but moved to Seattle, Washington with her family, so that her mother could help with the war effort. They returned to Jackson and she graduated from Jackson High School in 1950. Gloria was united in marriage to Darl William Smith on January 25, 1953 at the First Presbyterian Church in Jackson; to this marriage two children were blessed, Sandra and Larry. Gloria worked for 35 years as a Northwestern Bell Telephone operator before her retirement. She then worked as a cook at the school, Pines, Best Western, and catered for Mary Lou Drahota. Darl and Gloria enjoyed spending time together, taking trips, and even taking ballroom dance classes. Gloria became a resident of Good Samaritan Society- Jackson in August of 2008. Darl passed away on December 23, 2010. Gloria passed away at Sanford Jackson Hospital on January 2, 2013 at the age of 81 years, four months, and 22 days.

Gloria was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church of Jackson. She was a member the church circle and choir. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Quilters Club. Spending time with family and taking care of her grandchildren was one of Gloria’s favorite things to do. She had a passion for cooking and baking. She loved to entertain friends. She spent free time quilting, painting, doing crafts or shopping. In her younger years, Cueball and Gloria enjoyed bowling and they were on a bowling league where they won quite a few trophies.

Gloria is survived by her children Sandy (Kent Franks) Cregeen of Jackson and Larry (Cheley) Smith of Jackson, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Nancy (Carl) Hedman of Milwaukee, WI, sister-in-law Hazel Swanson of Portland, OR, and many nieces and nephews.

Gloria is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother James Swanson.
