Gladys V. McBreen

GLADYS MCBREEN, 94, of Heron Lake, passed away at the Lakeview Assisted Living in Heron Lake on Monday, January 24, 2011.  Funeral Service will be on Friday, January 28, 2011 at 10:30 AM at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Heron Lake with Pastor Mark Yackel-Juleen officiating.  Burial will be immediately following the service at the Lakeside Cemetery in Heron Lake.

Visitation will be on Thursday from 5 to 7 PM at the Osterberg-Hansen Funeral Home in Heron Lake and on Friday – one hour prior to the service at the Church.

Gladys Viola McBreen, daughter of Hans and Agnes (Daarud) Enger, was born in Emmetsburg, Iowa on June 12, 1916.  The family farmed in the Emmetsburg, Iowa area.  She graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1934.  After graduation, Gladys was employed at a hotel in Estherville.  Gladys married the love of her life, George McBreen, on September 18, 1940, in Spencer, Iowa.

The couple farmed in Windom, Minnesota, Estherville, Iowa, Emmetsburg, Iowa and in 1949 they purchased a farm near Heron Lake, Minnesota.  George and Gladys raised five children, Judy, Gary, Shari, Nancy, and Kevin.  Gladys enjoyed the farm life, helping George with chores with the various farm animals.  One of Gladys’ favorite things was her large garden and canning vegetables and fruits.  Gladys loved baking for her children and grandchildren, the brownies were a favorite of everyone.  Through the years Gladys prepared numerous large meals for family and farm helpers.

Gladys’ greatest joy was spending time with her family.  She was very proud of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.  Gladys loved showing visitors the pictures of all her grandchildren. 

Gladys enjoyed attending the grandchildren’s various sport and school activities.  She would listen to games on the radio when her health no longer permitted her to attend.  She always read the sports page of the local newspaper for articles of the grandchildren’s sports activities.  Another favorite activity was watching the Minnesota Twins Baseball games and Minnesota Vikings Football games.  She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and taking care of her golden lab, Misty.

Gladys enjoyed fishing trips with George and son Kevin.  In the summer of 1992 George and Gladys traveled to Alaska with Judy and Great Granddaughter Amanda to visit Grandson Jim.  Gladys and George also flew to Okalahoma to visit Judy and Pat.

Gladys was a resident of Lakeview Assisted Living since June of 2010.  She enjoyed visiting with the other residents, the great care and all the visitors who came to visit her.

Left to cherish her memory are Judy (Pat) Peddycoart, Shari (Duane) Gehl, Nancy (Mike) Horkey, Kevin (Kari) McBreen, thirteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, sister Arlene Flynn, sister-in-law Mary (Bud) Newton, and sister-in-law Goldie McBreen.  Gladys was preceded in death by her husband George, son Gary, son-in-law Bob Wolf, one granddaughter, two great grandsons, one great granddaughter, her parents Hans and Agnes Enger, six brothers, three sisters.
