LINUS J. SMITH, 90, of Jackson passed away at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Thursday, January 1, 2009.  Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, January 5, 2009 at 10:30 AM at the Church of the Good Shepherd with Father Peter Schuster officiating. Burial will be in Good Shepherd Cemetery.

LINUS JOSEPH SMITH was born on October 1, 1918 in Superior, Iowa, the son of Fred Herbert and Lucy Elizabeth (Nece) Smith.  He attended country school and later graduated from Superior High School in 1936.  After he graduated he worked with his father on the farm.  He also drove the Superior school bus for over 10 years.  He was united in marriage to Lorraine Oddson Moffitt on August 30, 1956 at the parish house in Estherville, Iowa.  He worked construction and helped his father farm.  In 1963, he and Lorraine bought a farm in Petersburg Township, Jackson County.  Linus passed away at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Thursday, January 1, 2009 at the age of 90 years and 3 months.

Linus was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed farming and raising cattle.  He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Jackson, where he had been active in the Knights of Columbus, sang in the church choir and the Polka Mass. He also enjoyed bowling, wood working, going to auctions and tinkering.

Linus is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lorraine of Jackson, a daughter, Donna (Jim) Barnhart of Galena, Illinois, 4 sons, Robert (Lonnie) Moffitt of Welcome, Minnesota, Dennis (LeAnn) Moffitt of Dunnell, Minnesota, Allan (Sandi) Moffitt of Taylor, Missouri and Mike (Bobetta) Smith of Jackson, 15 grandchildren, 17great-grandchildren and a sister, Fern Abell of Forsyth, Missouri.

Linus was preceded in death by his parents, 2 daughters, Ann Smith Wenzel, Patricia Shriver, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Visitation will be on Sunday 1-4-09 from 3 to 5 PM with a Prayer service at 4:30 pm at the Osterberg Funeral Home in Jackson and on Monday – one hour prior to the service at the Church.
