Ruth Sathe

RUTH AILI SATHE was born on July 22, 1915 in Nashwauk, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Aili (Pahnila) Lanto.  She graduated from Nashwauk High School in 1933 and from the University of Minnesota in 1937 with a degree in elementary education.  She moved to Jackson in 1938 and taught kindergarten for 3 years.  On June 23, 1941 at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, she was united in marriage to Gordon Elliot Sathe.  They briefly lived in Lakefield and while Gordon served his country during World War II, Ruth returned to Nashwauk.  Upon Gordon’s discharge, they moved back to Jackson where they raised 4 sons and she helped with the businesses.  She served as a substitute teacher for several years in Alpha, Petersburg and Jackson 

Ruth moved to the Jackson Pines in February of 2001.  Gordon passed away on March 15, 2002.  In October of 2006, she became a resident of the Jackson Good Samaritan Center where she passed away on passed away on December 18, 2008 at the age of 93 years, 4 months and 26 days.

Ruth had been a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Jackson, active in her circle taught Sunday school, and served as Sunday school superintendent for 20 years and sang in the church choir for over 60 years. 

She had been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and past commander of the Jackson County DAV Auxiliary, served with the American Red Cross Gray Ladies for over 30 years and served as an officer in Jackson’s Chapter of Eastern Star.

In 1987, Ruth was honored as “Outstanding Jackson County Senior Citizen”.  She served as vice-president of the Good Samaritan Auxiliary, was a charter member of the Jackson Health Care Foundation and enjoyed good times with the South Street birthday club..

Ruth is survived by 3 sons, David and his wife, Cyndee of Mankato, Minnesota, John and his wife, Pamela, of Jackson, Minnesota and Stephen and his wife, Terry, of Incline Village, Nevada, a daughter-in-law, Ginny of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, 8 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and her sister, Esther Tufvesson of Jackson, Minnesota.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gordon, a son, Mark Sathe and 2 brothers, Reino and Rudy Lanto.

Funeral service will be on Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Jackson with Rev. Doctor Martin Lucin officiating.  Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Jackson.

Visitation will be on Monday, 12-22-08, from 4 to 6 PM at the Osterberg Funeral Home and on Tuesday – one hour prior to the service at the Church.
